Tips for Travelers: 5 Things to Keep in Mind Before Exploring Italy

8/5/2023

Italy marked our first European trip. We were excited but aware of the challenges of navigating a foreign land where we did not speak the language. Like newbie travelers we conducted extensive research, devouring travel blogs and insights from fellow adventurers. Looking back on our journey, we've gathered a list of helpful tips and lessons learned - some of which we anticipated, and others we wish we had known before setting off on our Italian adventure.

Public transportation train

1) Transportation

If you're relying on public transportation during your travels, there are a few key considerations to keep in mind:

a) Ticket Purchases: You can conveniently purchase tickets from tobacco stores or train stations, both of which are plentiful and easy to find throughout most cities in Italy.

b) Keeping Your Card Topped Up: With the convenience of boarding buses from both doors, it's not uncommon for some passengers to skip paying their fare. To enforce payment, officials may randomly board buses to check for tap-ins. Be sure to have enough funds on your card to avoid incurring a fine.

2) Clothing

It's important to dress modestly, particularly when visiting popular churches and religious sites. Revealing or short clothing may result in denied entry, but don't worry! Many locations provide cover-ups for visitors. To be safe, consider carrying a shawl or light sweater to easily cover up before entering these revered destinations.

3) Buy tickets in advance

One of the most valuable lessons we learned was the importance of purchasing tickets in advance. As a hub for millions of tourists each year, Rome's popular attractions and events can quickly sell out. While we're all for spontaneous travel, we've discovered that purchasing museum tickets in advance can save you a lot of time and hassle.

4) Day trips

Take a break from the city you're staying in and embark on a day trip to explore the surrounding area. Whether you opt for a guided tour bus, high-speed train, or rent a car for a leisurely drive, there are plenty of opportunities to soak up stunning scenery and discover new destinations.

If you're planning to travel by high-speed train, it's important to purchase tickets in advance to avoid lengthy lines. Just like the bus, officials may check for validated tickets on trains, and failure to have one can result in a hefty fine.

5) Hidden gems

As avid planners, we at The Unwritten Postcard love having every site and activity scheduled to a tee. But sometimes, the most memorable moments and hidden gems can be found by simply wandering through the city streets. Alongside the well-known attractions, there are countless tucked-away treasures waiting to be discovered - from ornate churches with stunning art and architecture to hidden cafes and boutiques.

Our favorite finds were often located down charming side streets, and best of all, they were usually free and completely devoid of long lines. So while planning ahead is certainly helpful, don't be afraid to leave some time in your itinerary for spontaneous exploration.
